Principles of Interior Design

Sometimes it’s nice to slow down, regroup and think on the basics of design. We learned this in my very first class and at the time I didn’t realize how important it would be. Currently I actually keep a printout on my desk to always remind me and bring me back to the basic principles of design. Are they rules of design? Somewhat, but they are more of a suggestion than a policy. Thinking out of the box and breaking the “rules” can sometimes bring about great design. The principles of design are guidelines and when respected will be the difference between a professional designed space and an amateur design.

Scale: The size of an object.

Proportion: The size of an object in relation to other elements.

Balance: The visual weight of objects or elements in a space.

Rhythm: a repetition of an element.

Emphasis: The focal point of a space. The element that should catch your attention.

Harmony: Like an orchestra, all design elements should work together creating a harmonious feel, with no one "out of key" or causing an uncomfortable stir in your gut.

Scale, proportion, balance, rhythm, and emphasis: together, creating a harmonious aesthetic.

A well-designed space does not just happen. There are hundreds of elements and options to consider in just one space. When the principles are kept in the forefront of your mind it will give you direction and confidence as well as a finished space that makes your heart sing.
